Vietnam affirms anti-corruption policy

28/08/2008 -- 8:02 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has affirmed its consistent policy of fighting corruption, saying that all acts of corruption and bribery will be strictly punished in accordance with law, without any exception.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Le Dung made the statement on August 28 in reply to a correspondent’s question about Vietnam’s response to the Japanese Public Prosecutors Office’s decision on August 25 to prosecute four former executives of the Pacific Consultants International (PCI) for their involvement in bribing Vietnamese officials to win the ODA-funded East-West Avenue contract in Ho Chi Minh City.

“The Vietnamese Government and people highly appreciate and treasure official development assistance (ODA) granted to the country by foreign countries, including Japan,” the spokesman said.

He went on to say that Vietnam has been managing and using ODA efficiently and purposefully, particularly attaching importance to preventing waste and corruption in this process.

Vietnam received Japan’s judicial mandate on August 21 under which the Japanese site requests Vietnam’s cooperation in investigating the case, the spokesman said. He said relevant Vietnamese agencies are actively inquiring into the issue.

“Vietnam will work closely with Japan to soon clarify and appropriately handle the case in line with Vietnamese law, not letting it adversely affect ODA funds and the Vietnam-Japan bilateral relations,” the spokesman said.-Enditem
