ADB announces new poverty line for Asia

28/08/2008 -- 8:02 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on August 27 announced that it has adopted a poverty line that is more accurate and specifically more relevant to Asia and the Pacific region.

The new poverty line, called the Asian Poverty Line, is roughly 1.35 USD per day, the Manila-based regional lender said in a press release to announce its flagship annual statistical publication - Key Indicators 2008.

ADB said that according to the new evaluation system, there were probably 843 million people in Asia lived under the poverty line in 2005.

Ifzal Ali, ADB Chief Economist, called it a landmark study, saying that it is the first time a thorough sensitivity analysis of internationally comparable poverty estimates has been carried out.-Enditem
