29/08/2008 -- 2:17 PM

Vientiane (VNA) – The Australian government has provided 20 billion kip (more than 2 million AUD) for projects on safe removal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) left by the war in Laos .

Australia clearly understood UXO’s impacts on the Lao people’s daily lives as well as the country’s development and the country has supported UXO activities in Laos, Australian Ambassador to Laos Michele Forster said at the aid signing ceremony on August 28.

Since 1996, Australia has provided assisted 110 billion kip (15 million AUD) to promote the activities in Laos, he added.

Bounpone Sayasenh, Director of the Lao National UXO programme, said Laos is the most bombed country in the world. More than 30 years after the war ended, the issue is still a burden for the country and people.

According to the director, the Australian assistance will help UXO Laos clear about 950 hectares of UXO contaminated land in Khammoune provinces, thus contributing to the Lao government’s socio-economic development programme.-Enditem
