Russia hopes to maintain diplomatic ties with Georgia

29/08/2008 -- 10:28 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Russia believes it is essential to maintain diplomatic relations with Georgia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said on August 29.

Russia regrets the Georgian Foreign Ministry’s decision to lower diplomatic contacts and to cut the number of diplomats at its embassy in Moscow to five people, the RIA Novosti news agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

Under the current circumstances, it is essential to maintain working diplomatic contacts in order to address humanitarian and consulate issues, and people’s interests, he added.

He stressed that in case the diplomatic ties between Russia and Georgia are cut, this is not Russia’s choice but Georgia’s responsibility.

Georgia's parliament on August 28 adopted a resolution, urging the Georgian government to cut off diplomatic relations with Russia after Moscow's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states. –Enditem
