Hanoi (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh-based photographer Dao Hoa Nu was awarded first prize at the photo contest “Alignment of Poverty with Environment” on August 29. Her photo – titled Suong Mai (Morning Dew) – depicts two women who are fishing in the river, while one of the two second prize winners Nuoc Sach Ve Ban (Safe Water Comes to the Village) by Bui Hoa Tien shows ethnic women washing beside large water tanks. The third prize-winning photo Ban Den Choi (Visit of a Friend) by Nguyen Thi Thuy from the Hanoi Theatre and Cinema College , was taken on a field trip last year to the northern province of Ninh Binh. “It was flooded there. I went to Gia Vien district and saw a small girl rowing a skiff to visit her friends. The kids looked very happy, and it seemed they didn’t care about the flooding,” said Thuy. The jury panel awarded one first prize, two second prizes, three third prizes, and five encouragement prizes at the awards ceremony. The contest was launched by the Vietnam Artistic Photographers Association (VAPA) and the Vietnam Environmental Economics Association, and was sponsored by the UNDP and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). About 313 artists from 57 cities and provinces sent 1,639 photos to the organisers after the competition was launched three months ago. “Poverty and the environment is difficult to talk about and to write about. Look at the photos and you will see life behind them,” said Michael Parsons, from DFID-UN funded project, Harmonising Poverty Reduction and Environment Goals in Policy and Planning for Sustainable Development. The photo contest is a part of the project to improve living environment and reduce poverty in the country, said Vu Duc Canh, a member of the VAPA Standing Committee.-Enditem
