Cham ethnic minority celebrate grand festival

An Giang (VNA)- Muslims of the Cham ethnic minority in southern An Giang province have gone pilgrimage to the Jamiul-Aman mosque to celebrate the Grand Ramadan festival of the 1429 th year of the Muslim calendar.

Musahji, Head of the provincial Muslim Community Representative Board and patriarch of the Jamiul-Aman mosque, said the month-long Ramadan festival is a period for followers to controlling and concentrating their minds on human sufferings, thus sympathising and helping the poor.

As a result, one and every Muslim of the Cham ethnic minority in the province has contributed 3 kg of rice and one-tenth of their annual incomes to the charitable fund. They also pledged to stay away from alcohol drinking, gambling, prostitution and drug abuse.

Provincial authorities have praised the local Muslim Community Representative Board for their efforts to make a good link between the Government and its members, thus making State policies known and implemented by the community.

The over 12,500 strong Muslim Cham ethnic minority population have set up nine Cham communes in the province. They exercise their belief at 12 mosques and 14 temples and live in gospel with the Kinh ethnic major and Hoa and Khmer ethnic minority groups in the province.

Also in the agenda of the festival are the Festival of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Cham people and a football championship for Cham ethnic minority players in An Giang province.--Enditem
