China, RoK conduct drill to cope with oil spill

04/09/2008 -- 8:40 PM

Beijing (VNA) – China and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have conducted an exercise against oil spills in a bid to curb marine pollution.

The drill, which took place off the coast of Qingdao city ( Shandong province) on September 2, involved more than 500 people, one helicopter, one fixed-wing aircraft and 29 vessels.

The Northwest Pacific region is currently one of the seas with the highest risk of oil spills because China, the RoK, and Japan are big oil importers.

According to the Chinese Transport Ministry, an average of 400 oil tankers sail go to and from China every day, and last year, 320 million tonnes of crude oil were unloaded at coastal harbours.

Between 1973 and 2007, China's coastal areas witnessed 79 accidents involving the spillage of at least 50 tonnes of oil. –Enditem
