Thai PM Samak picks new foreign minister

06/09/2008 -- 8:52 PM

Bangkok (VNA) - Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has chosen Saroj Chavanaviraj, a former diplomat, as the new foreign minister, succeeding Tej Bunnag who resigned on September 3.

Saroj's appointment would be the third in seven months of PM Samak's coalition government.

The Bangkok Post quoted a source close to new minister Saroj as saying that he was seen as the most suitable person because he has a lot of experience in ASEAN and Cambodian affairs.

Saroj, 66, was the director-general of the ASEAN Department in 1988.

He retired in 2002 as Thai ambassador to Paris after serving for four years as permanent secretary for foreign affairs, local media reported.-Enditem
