Former PM Thaksin files for asylum in Britain

06/10/2008 -- 9:47 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Thai former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has applied for political asylum in the UK , where he has spent most of his time since being forced out of office two years ago, the UK Home Office said on October 6.

Former PM Thaksin and his wife applied for asylum when he flew into Britain in early August, the UK Home Office added.

Thailand's Supreme Court is trying Thaksin and his wife in absentia on charges accusing him of using his political influence as premier to help his wife buy a plot of prime Bangkok real estate.

The court issued the fourth arrest warrant for the former PM on September 26 when he failed to appear in court in Thailand to face corruption charges relating to the property scandal.

The Thai authorities have already frozen 76 billion baht (around 2.3 billion USD) of Thaksin's assets pending resolution of the case. –Enditem
