STAR 4 Conference begins in Ha Noi

Ha Noi, Feb. 24 (VNA) - The Fourth Secure Trade in the APEC Region (STAR 4) Conference began in Ha Noi on Feb. 24, with the theme "Enhancing the public-private partnership (PPP) in the implementation of secure trade measures". Over 200 representatives from public and private sectors in APEC member economies and international organizations as well as different Vietnamese ministries and branches will discuss four sub-themes: Trade and Security in the APEC Region (Perspective for the Enhancement of PPP); Maritime Security; Air Security; and Capacity building programmes for secure trade activities. In his opening address to the annual two-day event, Viet Nam's Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen stressed, "As residents and citizens in the Asia-Pacific region, we have the responsibility to cooperate so as to build and strengthen a secure and favourable environment across the region, ensuring human security as well as trade and facilitating investment." APEC accounts for approximately 45.8 percent of the world's trade, 21 percent of the world's top 30 container seaports, and 23 percent of the world's 30 busiest airports. "APEC is a region with stimulating business activities as well as challenging uncertainties in terms of security and terrorism threats," said Minister Tuyen, calling for increased cooperation across the APEC region between business and governments on security issues. STAR is one of the most important conferences on the sidelines of the APEC SOM I (Senior Official's Meeting), focusing on security measures to protect the movement of goods and people in the region.
