Viet Kieu make recommendations to the Party's draft Political Report

25/02/2006 -- 12:01 PM

Ha Noi, Feb. 25 (VNA) - The overseas Vietnamese community should have representatives in the National Assembly in order to strengthen the national solidarity and help attach the community strongly to their home country, said an American of Vietnamese origin.

Nguyen Tai Phuong, an overseas Vietnamese or 'Viet Kieu', made the remarks at a meeting held by the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese in Ha Noi on Feb. 22, adding that the Vietnamese community living abroad has great economic and intellectual potential, with nearly 3 million people settled in 90 countries.

Viet Kieu could enhance their understanding of the country's situation and convey their expectation to the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) and the State if they had representatives in the National Assembly, along with their roles in the Fatherland Front’s Central Committee, Phuong told the meeting.

The meeting was organized to collect recommendations to the draft Political Report of the Party Central Committee, which is to be submitted to the upcoming CPV's 10th national congress.

Dang Thi Loi, chairwoman of the Association for Viet Kieu who originated from coastal Hai Phong province, suggested at the meeting that the Party and the State need to further carry out the administrative reform process and make it easier for Viet Kieu in dealing with administrative agencies as well as introduce more policies to encourage Viet Kieu to make greater contributions to the country.

Participants at the meeting also made recommendations to the Party's renewal and strengthening process.

Nguyen Hoai Bac, a Viet Kieu living in Canada, applauded the Party's intention under the draft Political Report to allow its members to run private businesses. Bac suggested that Party members should be allowed to do business as they also are members of the society. -Enditem
