Ha Noi, March 13 (VNA) - Doctors discovered that a 14-year-old boy has five kidneys after he was admitted to the Viet Nam-Germany hospital in Ha Noi complaining of severe abdominal pain, surgeons said on March 13. They said the teen-ager, Pham Van Thuc, is the first patient in Viet Nam known to have up to five kidneys and he was recovering well after 23 days of treatment. Thuc was rushed to the hospital on February 19, writhing in pain with abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with a congenital disease in which a junction between his ureter and left kidney cistern is narrowed somewhere along its length. “Today, after very serious scientific work, we can conclude that the teen-age patient has five kidneys,” said Tran Ngoc Bich, chief of paediatrics at the hospital. Dr Bich explained that a week after Thuc’s first operation, an x-ray found abnormalities in the shape of his left kidney. The doctors decided to reoperate and they discovered Thuc’s four kidneys instead of one as usual. The extra kidneys will be removed if they cause pain or do not function, doctors said. They said Thuc’s right kidney is normal and functioning and his left kidney would function if excess fluid could be drained. Thuc, who is from Cam Van commune, Cam Giang district of Hai Duong province, 70km southeast of Ha Noi, is recovering and is now able to eat and talk.-Enditem
