Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam has made commendable achievements in implementing two out of three pillars of the Anti-Corruption Action Plan for the Asia-Pacific region, affirmed Chairman of the Viet Nam-based American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Thomas O'Dore at a Viet Nam Business Forum held in Ha Noi on June 5. Regarding the first pillar "Supporting Active Public Involvement", he said that Vietnamese leaders, media, public and the local press in particular, have exposed and strongly condemned corruption. Concerning the second pillar "Strengthening Anti-bribery Actions and Promoting Integrity in Business Operations", the Vietnamese government has taken various measures in attempts to remove corrupt officials and initiate appropriate punishment. At the forum, the Viet Nam-based Australian Chamber of Commerce (AusCham) applauded Viet Nam's efforts in addressing the PMU 18 corruption scandal. AusCham expressed its agreement with Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh's view that strengthening the fight against corruption and waste is a pressing demand of society and a political determination of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. Besides, AusCham emphasised the necessity of continuing to discuss issues related to anti-corruption at future dialogues, such as the Consultative Group Meeting slated for later this week in the central coastal city of Nha Trang. At the seminar, the European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) voiced its support for Viet Nam's recent declarations in fighting corruption. Also, it suggested Viet Nam join the Anti-Bribery Convention of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation Development (OECD) in hopes of getting support from other convention-member countries for Viet Nam's efforts in reducing corruption. Both the investor circles and relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies realised that corruption remains a great challenge to Viet Nam's development process and pointed to the need for local authorities from grassroots levels and the whole community to take continuous, concerted efforts in fighting corruption.-Enditem
