World media reports on Viet Nam’s WTO membership

11/01/2007 -- 10:19 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Media organisations across the world on Jan. 11 carried articles reflecting the event that Viet Nam became a full member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Jan. 11.

“After years of negotiation and anticipation, Viet Nam officially became the 150th WTO member on Jan. 11, opening the door to a new era of trade and investment in one of Asia 's fastest-growing economies,” the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Entry for Viet Nam , whose economy has grown by an average of more than 7 percent over the last decade - comes as good news for the global organisation, the AP added.

In its article entitled Viet Nam became the 150th member of the WTO, the Times newspaper stressed that when Viet Nam became a full member of the WTO, the country would become more prosperous.

The textile, seafood and other export-oriented industries have great expectations, the Times said, adding that from farms to insurance companies are ready to cope with competition from abroad.

Switzerland ’s 20 Minutes newpaper said that Viet Nam ’s entry into WTO will be an opportunity for the country to attract more foreign investment and improve its exports.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) emphasised that Viet Nam’s WTO membership will help Viet Nam increase its access to foreign markets, but requires import tariff reduction.

The Standard and Die Presse newspapers of Austria reported that with the WTO membership, Viet Nam expects to attract over 11 billion USD foreign direct investment (FDI) after the country’s FDI inflow reached a record high of 10 billion USD last year.

Meanwhile, in Geneva , Ambassador Eirik Glenne, Chairman of the WTO General Assembly, and other WTO officials welcomed Vietnamese Ambassador to the WTO Ngo Quang Xuan and other Vietnamese diplomats at the WTO Headquarters.-Enditem
