HCM City (VNA) - Former Deputy Trade Minister Mai Van Dau, 65, was on March 23 sentenced to 14 years for receiving bribery related to textile and garment companies' export quota to the United States.
The HCM City court also imposed a jail term of 17 years on Le Van Thang, 53, who was former Deputy Head of the Export-Import Department of the Trade Ministry.
The two were among 14 defendants at the ten-day trail on the graft case.
Three other defendants charged with "acting as brokers in bribery" received sentences ranging from three years' probation to 12 years in jail. Three more received punishment of between three years' probation to five years in jail for offering bribes, including one to a Chinese citizen, Lai Wai Hung, 55, Deputy General Director of the Sundance Clothing Viet Nam Co. Ltd., who will be imprisoned for five years.
Five defendants were found guilty of "taking advantage of the relationship with people in positions of power to make a profit", "abusing power while performing their duties", fraud and forging official documents, and were sentenced to between 1 year and 18 days to five years in jail.
The court gave a verdict of not guilty of forging valuable papers to Vo Thi Thanh Hang, 44, who is director of a private company, Hoang Tri.-Enditem
