Ha Noi (VNA) - A total of 877 candidates, including more than 200 self-nominees, have been initially named in the official list to stand for the upcoming 12th National Assembly election after the third consultative conference.
Of those, 165 candidates were recommended by central-level agencies and organisations following the conference held in Ha Noi on Apr. 14. The other 712 were from 64 provinces and cities nationwide.
The candidates will run for 500 seats in the legislature.
Most of the successful candidates are university graduates, many of them post-graduates. Women accounted for 37.5 percent of the hopefuls; ethnic minorities, 21.4 percent; and religious dignitaries, 1.1 percent.
Each officially listed candidate received 50 percent or more of votes from their working and residential places, and some of them even gained 100 percent. The list was whittled down as those who received less than 50 percent of votes were withdrawn from the list.
More fell by the wayside as a number of candidates from the preliminary list withdrew their candidacy applications during the proceeding to the third consultative conference.
In response to pressing issues raised by local voters, relevant agencies in provinces and cities across the country have been tackling controversy over certain candidates involved in the election.
As a result, candidates who were found to be involved in corruption or show signs of red tape and falsifying personal information were rejected from the list.
As planned, the list of official candidates selected from the third consultative conference will be sent to provincial and municipal election committees by Apr. 20.
The Election Council will announce the list of candidates for each constituency before Apr. 25.
From May 3-16, the candidates will meet voters at their constituencies to campaign for their election through the Fatherland Front.-Enditem |
