Foreign media highlight 12th NA election

21/05/2007 -- 11:54 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Foreign mass media and new agencies had a lot to say on the ebullient atmosphere of Viet Nam’s 12th National Assembly election on May 20.

According to China’s Xinnua News Agency, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nong Duc Manh was present from early morning at a polling station in Phan Dinh Phung street in Ha Noi to fulfill his civil right as a voter.

The agency also quoted Pham Thi Hong, a 99-year-old voter, as saying many candidates for the 12th NA are talented and honest. The Hanoian said she hoped new NA deputies would try their best to make the country more prosperous and improve people’s standard of living.

ITAR-TASS News Agency of Russia said that Viet Nam’s more than 50 million-strong electorate were eager to vote for the 500 most deserving representatives to the country’s legislative body.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Novosti News Agency emphasised the importance of Viet Nam’s 12th NA election, saying that from the results of the election, the country will choose a new board of leaders, including highest State and Government leaders.

The French news agency AFP said that the election would bring a new face to the Vietnamese legislative body.

The Japanese media, particularly the Kyodo news agency said that Viet Nam wants to expand public participation in the new legislature; the 12th NA election has 150 non-Party member candidates and 30 self-nominated candidates. It also said the election took place in a democratic way.

Viet Nam News Agency’s correspondent in Cairo briefed that mass media in the Middle East highlighted the NA election in Viet Nam. Of them the A1 Arabiya television detailed at length the high-spirited atmosphere in Viet Nam before and after the election.

The UK’s news agency Reuters said Viet Nam elected NA deputies in a new trade era. Ha Noi was adorned with flags, banners and information boards on the election. Voters went to the polls early. In Ho Chi Minh City, national flags were also prominent at all shops and houses. The Thong Nhat (Unification) Hall and main streets were aflame with red flags.

Reuters added that the renewal policies of the Communist Party of Viet Nam opened up reforms in markets, and competitiveness that helped improve the people’s lives.-Enditem
