Jakarta (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s first official visit to Indonesia on August 8 produced memorandums of understanding on cooperation in culture and anti-corruption. After his arrival, PM Dung travelled to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta for talks with host Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The Vietnamese PM had a meeting with Indonesian Vice President Yusuf Kalla to whom conveyed congratulations to the Indonesian government on their achievements in national construction and expressed hope that Indonesia’s role and position in the region and international arenas would continue to grow. When speaking to Yusuf Kalla, who is also leader of one of the archipelago’s major parties, the PM hoped that he would contribute to boost the relationship that Viet Nam and Indonesia share. PM Dung stated Viet Nam’s desire to attach importance to relations with Indonesia and stressed that the ties were established more than five decades ago by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno. Vice President Yusuf Kalla said he hoped PM Dung’s visit would pave the way for a new era in the two ASEAN members’ ties. Addressing the Viet Nam-Indonesia business forum organised by the two chambers of industry and commerce, PM Dung again reiterated the long-lasting traditional relationship enjoyed by the two countries. He noted that the Viet Nam-Indonesia Joint Declaration on the Framework of Friendly and Comprehensive Partner entering the 21st century that was signed in 2003 acted as an important legal foundation to improve on economy, trade and investment. He singled out bilateral trade turnover for 2006 reached 1.7 billion USD but over the first half of 2007, turnover was already pushing close to 1.5 billion USD. PM Dung affirmed that Viet Nam will create favourable conditions for Indonesian investors in the budding Asian economy before the two chambers of industry and commerce signed a cooperation deal to conclude the forum.-Enditem
