New York (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung garnered support for Viet Nam's bid for a United Nations Security Council non-permanent seat at his meetings with leaders from Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Guinea, Italy, the Arab League and Slovakia.
The meetings took place on September 25 in New York while PM Dung was attending the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Meeting with the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, PM Dung emphasised the need for officials of the two countries to visit each other more frequently in order to help with the establishment of future cooperative and partnership ties.
The two countries should come to sign cooperation agreements and accords as soon as possible in order to provide a legal foundation to facilitate their future bilateral cooperative activities, PM Dung told the Nicaraguan President.
President Ortega said that the two countries should soon establish a joint committee as Nicaragua is eager to cooperate with Viet Nam while stating his recognition of Viet Nam as a market economy.
PM Dung and President Ortega agreed that Viet Nam and Nicaragua should boost their coordination and mutual support at the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), for the sake of their people's benefits and peace in their regions.
In talks with Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa, PM Dung said "Viet Nam wants to boost and expand multifaceted cooperation with Arab countries, especially in the oil and gas industry, labour affairs and trade".
Meeting with the Bosnian Presidency Chairman, Zeljko Komsic, PM Dung said the two countries should quickly begin negotiations on their agreements on economic cooperation, the promotion of protection and investment, and the avoidance of double-taxation to further their cooperation.
Meanwhile, PM Dung reached an agreement with President of Ecuador Rafael Correa on measures to ratchet up the two countries' cooperation in trade, oil and gas, and tourism.
With Prime Minister of Guinea Lansana Kouyate, PM Dung agreed to assign government ministries and sectors to join their counterparts from Guinea to work out appropriate ways and means to accelerate the two countries' economic and commercial ties in the future while focusing on agriculture, education and healthcare cooperation in the meantime.
Meeting with Italian counterpart Romano Prodi, PM Dung said he hoped the two countries would speed up cooperation in investment, tourism, labour affairs, culture, education and training while the Italian PM said his country is striving to become a leading European investor in Viet Nam .
The same day, PM Dung received Foreign Minister of Slovakia Jan Kubis, where both praised the contributions by more than 10,000 Vietnamese residing in Slovakia.
The Slovak Foreign Minister said his country will work to strengthen cooperation with Viet Nam by facilitating the open of Viet Nam 's embassy in Slovakia and plans to establish an embassy in Viet Nam soon. He also said that the Slovak businesspeople are eager to invest in projects on energy, chemicals production, and the development of financial and banking markets in Viet Nam.
The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem sat down for talks with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekunas and Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol Ajawin.
The two FMs affirmed that their countries have backed Viet Nam in the race for a non-permanent seat at UN Security Council in the 2008-09 term.-Enditem
