Once-conjoined twin Viet dies

HCM City (VNA) – 27-year-old Nguyen Viet, who was separated from his twin in 1988, died of acute pneumonia at Tu Du hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on October 6. Siamese twins Viet and Duc were born joined together at the pelvis in 1981 in Sa Thay district, Central Highlands Kon Tum province. Their parents were exposed to Agent Orange that was heavily sprayed by the US armies during the war. The twins were successfully separated on October 4, 1988. They have enjoyed the longest post-separation life among Siamese twins in the world, proving Viet Nam’s medical progress. Viet suffered from cerebritis in May, 1986 before the separation. He was sent to Japan in June, 1986 for further treatment and returned to Viet Nam four months later. Since April, 2007, Viet started to suffer from pneumonia and stomach hemorrhage.
