Ha Noi (VNA) - Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has lauded the United Nations (UN) for its crucial role in dealing with a wide range of activities in the world.
In an article published by the Nhan Dan (People) daily on October 11, Deputy PM Khiem said the UN has for 62 years carried out the noble mission of maintaining peace and international security in the world.
The organisation has also taken an active part in promoting global cooperation for settling socio-economic, cultural, humanitarian, and human right issues, the Deputy PM said.
He singled out the UN's role in preventing a new world war as the organisation's greatest contribution to the world.
For more than six decades, the organisation has worked to bring peaceful solutions to more than 170 conflicts in addition to deploying 60 peacekeeping missions in conflict-struck areas to help related sides end their confrontation, and building 15 international conventions on disarmament to support the maintenance of peace and stability in the world, the Deputy PM elaborated.
He went on to hail the UN for its active involvement in creating a fair environment for economic, trade and financial activities in the globe, while giving due attention to the interests of developing countries and the making of documents concerning human rights.
Regarding Viet Nam 's joining of the UN and its activities, the Deputy PM affirmed that the Southeast Asian country has unswervingly supported the UN's goals and has enthusiastically taken part in its activities since it became the organisation's member in 1977.
Viet Nam has joined other UN member countries in the efforts to get the UN's resolutions, decisions and specific actions adopted in order to further heighten the organisation's role in the international arena and boost the coordination between nations in the fight against arms race, the disarmament and the defence of their independence and self-determination, Deputy PM Khiem wrote.
He added that Viet Nam 's contributions to the UN have been recognised by UN member countries as they had elected the country to the leading positions of several UN agencies, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and UNDP/UNFPA.
The Deputy PM went on to say that Viet Nam has since 1997 run for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 tenure. In October 2006, the country was nominated as the sole Asian candidate for the post and has since then garnered supports far and wide.
Deputy PM Khiem reiterated Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's commitment at a recent session of the UN General Assembly that Viet Nam would do its best to carry out the noble mission of the UN Security Council.-Enditem |
