US, UK congratulate Viet Nam on election to UNSC

Ha Noi (VNA) – The US and UK embassies in Ha Noi on October 17 congratulated Viet Nam on its election to the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term. The US embassy’s press release cited Charge d’ Affaires Jonathan Aloisi to Viet Nam as saying that “the US values its close and expanding relationship with Viet Nam and looks forward to continued cooperation to advance our common goals and interests.” Viet Nam ’s membership in the key, decision-making UN forum will offer greater opportunities for consultation and collaboration between the US and Viet Nam , the press release added. Meanwhile, the UK Ambassador to Ha Noi, Robert Gordon, said membership of the Security Council represents an important further milestone in Viet Nam ’s growing international integration, and it will represent new challenges. “The UK stands ready to support Viet Nam in meeting those challenges,” he stressed. The UN General Assembly on October 16 elected Viet Nam as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council with 183 out of 190 votes.-Enditem
