Ha Noi (VNA) – The media play an important role in and contribute to the fight against corruption, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said on December 17.
The Deputy PM, who is also deputy head of the National Steering Committee for Corruption Prevention and Control, made the statement at the Committee’s meeting in Ha Noi with leaders from media organisations nationwide.
He went on to say that the media help increase public awareness of laws and encourage the people to abide by laws, as well as make them more understand the Party and the Government’s efforts to drive back corruption.
Media organisations’ reports delivered at the meeting showed that over the past years, the media had participated in disseminating information on anti-corruption policies and laws, covering and even helping discover corruption cases.
However, the reports said, several reporters abused information relating to corruption cases, leading to the violation of privacy of citizens while some papers published wrong information, resulting in bad public opinions. There were also journalists who took advantage of fighting corruption to make profit for themselves.
The committee indicated in its report that more than 8,600 inspections conducted in Viet Nam during 2007 have detected frauds of over 2.8 trillion VND and 1.24 million USD.
Following the inspections, punishment was also proposed for more than 1,460 officials and public employees.-Enditem
