New York (VNA) – Viet Nam reaffirmed its position that any solution on the future status of Kosovo must be based on the provision of Security Council resolution 1244 (1999) and the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council Ambassador Le Luong Minh made the statement at an emergency meeting held in New York on February 14 on the situation of Kosovo that prepares to unilaterally declare independence and separation from Serbia. Ambassador Minh said that for the complexity of the issue of Kosovo, where the need to resolve the humanitarian situation and that for durable comprehensive solution were recognized, the Security Council on June 10 1999 adopted resolution 1244 with the consent of the parties concerned. “Resolution 1244 (1999) provides for a political solution of the crisis in Kosovo based on two major elements, namely a substantial self-government for Kosovo and the commitment of all Member States to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the successor State of which is now the Republic of Serbia, and of the other States of the region,” he said. He went on to confirm that “Viet Nam has closely followed the developments relating to the situation in Kosovo and consistently supported dialogue and negotiations between the parties concerned aimed at resolving their differences and reaching a comprehensive solution which guarantees the legitimate interests of all peoples concerned, lasting peace in the Balkans, Europe and the world in accordance with the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, including the principle of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States. “We call upon the parties concerned to exercise restraint and continue to strive, with the support and contributions of the international community and the United Nations, for a comprehensive, durable solution meeting the common aspirations of the peoples of the Balkans and the world,” the Vietnamese diplomat.-Enditem
