Hanoi (VNA) – Since its establishment in 2003, the fund to support the overseas Vietnamese community has spent nearly 24 billion VND (1.6 million USD) on 60 projects at home and abroad.
At the fifth meeting of the Overseas Vietnamese Community Support Fund Sponsoring Council in Ha Noi on March 20, the fund’s director Nguyen Quang Tinh said these projects cover a wide range of areas including activities to help overseas Vietnamese return home, schools for Vietnamese children living abroad, art and performance tours and seminars on overseas intellectuals and business people.
Tinh said some projects were particularly successful, including the summer-camp for overseas Vietnamese youth, homeland visits for those who have contributed to the nation, seminars for overseas Vietnamese businesses in Europe , and meetings for youth and students in European countries.
Through the fund, the Vietnamese government also provided a total of 800,000 USD to construct the Nguyen Du school in Laos and a school for Vietnamese children in Cambodia .
Former Vice State President and the Fund President Truong My Hoa said the fund has markedly contributed to accelerating overseas Vietnamese work, in the spirit of recognising the Vietnamese diaspora as an integral part of the nation.
This year, the fund plans to provide 6.8 billion VND for projects on conservation and development of traditional cultural identity, developing the Vietnamese language in the overseas community and return-home activities such as spring meeting and a summer camp in Vietnam.
It also intends to send performance troupes to some European countries such as Britain , Northern Ireland and Canada and Japan , as well as hold functions for overseas Vietnamese academics and cultural experts to contribute to the 1,000 th anniversary event of Thang Long-Ha Noi.
The fund will also assist overseas Vietnamese to return home for investment, economic and scientific cooperation, hold a meeting in Ukraine for Vietnamese youth and students living in some European countries, and conduct a meeting of Vietnamese students in Singapore.-Enditem
